Rawcliffe Bridge Primary School
Physical Education Policy
The Philosophy of Teaching Physical Education
Children need to be encouraged to be involved in physical education activities in order to develop physically, emotionally and to promote good health through exercise. Children learn fair play and sportsmanship, good qualities for adult life and they learn to express themselves in more creative ways using music and dance. Children learn to enjoy themselves and can channel feelings of competitiveness in a positive way.
Aims
At Rawcliffe Bridge Primary School we aim:
- To give our pupils opportunities for progression, knowledge and development of skills through the enjoyment of physical activity in a structured curriculum and safe, supportive environment.
- To foster a positive attitude towards fitness, health and hygiene.
- To ensure that each child receives a balanced programme of physical activities as set out in National Curriculum.
- To ensure that each child will be taught in a safe, structured environment in which he/she can develop physical skills, become self-motivated and acquire confidence and pride in physical achievement.
- To ensure that each child will be encouraged to develop to his/her full potential.

We aim to encourage all pupils to reach their full potential through the provision of varied activities.
The Teaching of Physical Education at Rawcliffe Bridge Primary School
Physical Education will be taught to meet the requirements of National Curriculum for both key stages and the Early Learning Goals for children in Reception. Where appropriate units from QCA documents will be used and also the Val Sabin Course in gymnastics and dance. TOPS scheme is used for games planning.
Physical Education will be taught as Games, Gymnastics, Dance, Swimming, Athletics and Outdoor and Adventurous activities. Key stage 2 children will receive 2 hours per week and key stage 1 and Foundation stage children will receive 1 1/2 hours per week.
Outside facilities and specialists will be used. E.g. swimming facilities in Goole and the skills of coaches from Doncaster Rovers Football Club. The school has a link with Sandra Gilbane to teach Tai Chi for part of the autumn term each year. (Swimming is taught to Years 4,5 and 6 for a period of twelve weeks each summer term.)
It is planned to use an Outdoor Activity centre to teach children skills such as orienteering. The school uses Sutherland Lodge in Cropton Forest.
PE is taught in the school grounds and the school hall. A timetable has been produced to allocate time in the hall.
Planning and Implementation
Long term planning is produced by the whole staff and recorded on the whole school curriculum map and follows a two year rolling programme to cater for mixed year groups in each class. Medium term planning is produced by the class teacher and includes activities, resources, differentiation, and opportunities for evaluation and assessment for each week of the term.
Short term planning is completed by the class teacher and makes reference to the lesson/activity in the medium term plan.
Assessment
The assessment of P.E is an integral part of teaching. Children are encouraged to evaluate their own performance and that of others. This allows teachers to identify what has been learned and to monitor pupils’ progress. Assessment should also diagnose and identify ways of overcoming particular learning difficulties. A summary of each unit is kept by the teacher and used in the annual report to parents.
Health and Safety
Teachers will be made aware of Risk assessments taken for PE lessons. The file with these risk assessments is kept in the staff room. Equipment will be checked annually to make sure it is well maintained and suits its purpose. PE will take place within the school grounds, or at a venue with a recognised risk assessment, e.g. Swimming baths or another primary school.
The school prospectus includes a paragraph on safety during PE to ensure that each child and parent/guardian is aware of the need for a dress code that encourages safety, e.g.:
- No jewellery to be worn
- Children change into their own PE kit
- A child will only be excused from PE if they have a note signed by parents
- Change of clothing and shoes to be worn
- Long hair tied back
- Appropriate warm clothing worn for outside activities
Teachers will also ensure that each chilld knows where the equipment is stored and how to handle and use it safely.
Resources
The PE co-ordinator will ensure that the resources are made available for effective teaching of the National Curriculum. An inventory of which is kept in the subject leader’s file.
