Curriculum

The curriculum is everything that a child learns in school.  At Rawcliffe Bridge Primary School we give the children a broad and balanced education giving them the opportunities to develop skills for life. We follow the requirements of the National Curriculum and have developed our own Creative Curriculum based on whole school themes.

Our core subjects are:

  • English, Maths, Science, ICT

Our foundation Subjects are:

  • Art, Music, Geography, PE, Design Technology, History, Religious Education

In order to achieve a broad and balanced curriculum, we also feel it necessary to include other subjects such as

Personal Health, Social Education, Citizenship and Environmental Issues. The children in Key stage two also learn French and German on a two-year cycle and German is being introduced to the infants in September 2008.

The PE curriculum is made up of work in gymnastics, dance, striking and fielding games, net and wall games. We also place a strong emphasis on teaching games for the children to play during break-time and independently.

Years 1 and 2 follow the curriculum for Key Stage 1.  Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 follow the curriculum for Key Stage 2.  Reception children are working towards the Early Learning Goals  as outlined in the Early Years Foundation Strategy. In January 2009 when the Nursery children start they will also be working towards their Early Learning goals.
The work is planned on a four-year cycle as we have mixed age classes. We plan work on a theme and include a very creative context to the curriculum as we feel this motivates children.
In 2008-09 acadmic year the school is working on cycle B.
Delivery of the Curriculum

A range of teaching approaches is used to deliver the curriculum, hence children may work as a class, in groups or individually.  Children are taught by their own class teacher, but may also be taken by other teachers, higher level teaching assistants and teaching assistants, who follow work planned by the class teacher.
We also have peripatetic teachers who come in to school to teach violin, flute, clarinet and guitar.

We aim to constantly challenge the children and help them to move forward at a steady pace.  We plan to provide each child with tasks at an appropriate level, based whenever possible on first hand experience and geared to their needs.  Each child’s progress is constantly monitored and recorded against school and national targets.  We have policies and schemes of work concerning all of the areas of the curriculum, which we teach. Yearly plans of the curriculum are sent to parents each September.
